A specific beginning
Mickey Ashmore started Sabah in New York in 2013 after living in Istanbul. His founder story describes adapting a traditional Turkish shoe with a workshop in Gaziantep, then selling the first orders from his East Village apartment.
The brand now connects its footwear to workshops in Gaziantep and El Paso and to stores called Sabah Houses. Those places give the product a traceable setting: where the shoes are made and where customers encounter them.
Made to be discovered
Sabah’s origin story gives hosting a central role. Ashmore opened his apartment to visitors and let people discover the shoes through gatherings and conversations. Our founder profile looks at that approach in more detail.
The brand’s interest for The Know is the relationship between craft and a welcoming place to shop. A product can introduce someone to a store; the experience inside can give them a reason to remember it.
